Proposed Practice Boundary Extension

Portslade Health Centre is proposing to apply to NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board (ICB) for permission to extend our practice boundary.

We would like to hear your views before submitting our application.

What are we proposing?

If approved, the extension would allow us to register patients living within the additional area shown in green on the map below.

The proposed extension would reach east to Hove Street, follow Portland Road and extend north via Ingram Crescent East to Old Shoreham Road. This would give residents in the additional area a greater choice of GP practice and allow us to retain existing patients who move into this area.

Our current practice boundary will remain unchanged while the proposal is being considered.

What is a practice boundary?

A practice boundary is the geographical area a GP practice covers. It helps determine whether someone lives within the area served by the practice and can apply to register.

Frequently asked questions

How can the practice change its boundary?

The practice must apply to NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board, which plans and funds local healthcare services.

Our application will explain the proposed change, how we plan to manage any additional demand and the feedback received from patients and others affected by the proposal.

The extension can only take effect once approval has been given.

Do I need to do anything if I am already registered?

No. You do not need to take any action, and you will not need to change GP practice because of this proposal.

If you move home in the future, please let us know so we can check your new address against the practice boundary and discuss your registration with you.

Will more patients affect appointment availability?

We understand that access to appointments is important to our patients.

As part of our planning, we are considering appointment demand, staffing and clinical space. If the extension is approved, we will monitor patient numbers and appointment availability closely and review our staffing and resources as needed.

Our aim is to manage any growth carefully while continuing to provide good care for our existing and newly registered patients.

Does the practice have enough space for additional patients?

We have recently completed renovation work that has created additional clinical rooms on the ground floor.

These rooms provide more space for patient care. We will continue to review how we use our premises alongside staffing and appointment demand.

Would people living in the proposed additional area have to change GP practice?

No. Extending our boundary would give residents in the additional area the option to apply to register with us. It would not require them to leave their current GP practice.

How many new patients do you expect, and would they join all at once?

We expect any increase to happen gradually, as many people living in the proposed additional area will already be registered with another GP practice.

The exact number who may choose to register is not yet known. If the proposal is approved, we will monitor registrations closely and use this information to plan our services.

How will I find out what happens next?

We will publish an update on our website after reviewing the feedback and once a decision has been made about our application. Any approved change and its start date will be clearly communicated to patients.
