Flu Prevention

The best way to prevent flu is by having a flu jab. It can prevent flu in up to 8 out of 10 people, and people who catch flu will have milder symptoms if they have been vaccinated.

  • The flu jab cannot give you flu

  • People at risk of flu need a jab every year – having one last year won’t protect you this year

  • The flu jab can be given quickly and easily. There are rarely any side effects.

If you are in a high risk group you should have a flu jab.

Free Flu Jabs for High Risk Groups

Flu can be a very serious disease for some people.  We offer a free annual flu jab to the following high-risk patients:

  • people aged 65 or over

  • pregnant women (this winter the flu vaccine will be offered to ALL pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy)

  • people with a serious long term medical condition

  • chronic (long-term) lung disease

  • chronic heart disease

  • chronic kidney disease

  • chronic liver disease

  • chronic neurological disease (such as stoke and TIA)

  • a weakened immune system (caused by disease or medical treatment)

  • diabetes mellitus

  • multiple Sclerosis and related conditions

  • hereditary and degenerative disease of the central nervous system; and

  • Patients in long-stay residential care homes or in other long–term care where infections are likely to spread rapidly and cause high morbidity and mortality (this does not include prisons, young offenders institutions, university halls of residence etc.)

  • Patients who receive a carer’s allowance or who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may, in the judgement of their GP, be at risk if the carer falls ill. This should be given on an individual basis at the GP’s discretion.
